Reiki

What is Reiki?
The practice of Reiki is an original method of healing developed by Mikao Usui in Japan, early in the 20th century. The Japanese word Reiki means 'Universal Energy'. Eastern medicine has always recognised and worked with this energy, which flows through all living things and is vital to well-being. The healing energy works on every level, not just the physical, and promotes the body's regenerative self-healing ability. Reiki is a non-invasive therapy whose purpose is to treat holistically to restore balance and harmony.

What are the benefits of Reiki?
The energy of Reiki can be used to great effect in many ways. It can help to alleviate stress and tension, and the many symptoms associated with this. Reiki can help accelerate the healing of physical problems, balance the emotions, improve the quality of sleep and may also provide a closer connection with our inner wisdom.

Reiki is a gentle energy and may be used safely by all ages, including the new-born, pregnant mothers, surgical patients, the frail and elderly people. It may be used alongside conventional medication or natural remedies because it acts in a complementary way.

What happens during a Reiki treatment?
At your first treatment, I will carry out a brief consultation to determine essential medical information and to find out what you are hoping to achieve from receiving Reiki. The treatment is usually carried out while you are lying down, in a comfortable and peaceful environment. There is no need to remove any indoor clothing. I will place my hands gently in a series of positions on the body and by doing this, I am acting as a conduit for the flow of the universal energy. Your system automatically draws in only as much Reiki as is needed, using it in whatever way is most appropriate at the time.

I finish your treatment with a technique that I have devised that works on cleansing and rebalancing your chakras (energy centres). I use my knowledge of Reflexology to connect to the chakras through your feet, using a very light touch (through socks if appropriate).

After your treatment, you should experience a sense of calm and well-being. Clients often find that the answer to a question or a solution to a problem has entered their mind, or it might have helped them to make a decision. Many people report an improvement in their sleeping patterns and a reduction in their stress levels. There is no right or wrong way to experience a Reiki treatment - every person is unique and Reiki respects this.

Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT)

Emotional Freedom Technique (or EFT for short), is a treatment based on the discovery that negative emotions cause a disruption in the body's energy system. These disruptions may manifest themselves in many different ways - prime examples are anxiety, stress, fears, phobias, trauma, addictions, lack of self confidence, cravings and physical pain.

EFT is simply an emotional version of acupuncture WITHOUT the needles! It works by stimulating energy meridian points on your head, face, upper body and hands by lightly tapping with the fingertips. It is gentle, non-invasive and works with your body's subtle energies to rebalance and bring the negative emotions to the surface. Once we have recognised them, the negatives can be turned into positives and ultimately when they are resolved, it can bring freedom from the presenting problem. EFT often works where nothing else has!


What happens during an EFT treatment?
Firstly, you will receive a short consultation to find out a little bit about you and your presenting condition, which may be physical or emotional. I will ask you to rate your initial level of discomfort on a scale of 0 to 10. You will sit in a comfy chair to receive your treatment and I will demonstrate the tapping positions before I start so that you are comfortable with the sensation. Together, we will decide on your 'setup statement', which helps us to focus on the problem.

I will then perform a few 'rounds' of EFT on you, encouraging you to talk about the problem as we go. Special techniques can be used if distressing memories are awakened. Usually, a sense of relief is experienced, which can be in the form of an emotional release (sighing, yawning, tears, laughter, etc), or as a feeling of calm acceptance and realisation. It is important to remember that you are in control all the time and I am there to guide you through.

The aim is to reduce your initial rating to a lower score. For example, you may start off by scoring your fear of spiders at level 10 meaning that you can't bear to even think about them, let alone being in the same room as them! As the EFT progresses, we use techniques to collapse your fears to diminish the intensity, so that by the end of the session you feel confident that you can tolerate being near a spider, even though you might not be ready to pick it up and stroke it just yet!

I will teach you the basic routine to use on yourself whenever you need it. This will help you to reinforce your new positive behaviour pattern and tap away any remaining fear or anxiety in moments of stress.

EFT is simple and easy to use and, above all, it is fun! You should leave the session feeling positive, relaxed and in control.


How many sessions do I need?
Quite often, one session is enough to help you to resolve your problem. However, deep-seated patterns of negative behavior may take a little longer to shift so it may be advisable to come back a second or third time. We may also find that the removal or 'collapsing' of one issue may allow other things to arise that can be worked on at a later date. EFT continues to work on a subtle level for at least three days after your treatment.

Although relief may be obtained in minutes, I allow 1 hour 15 minutes for your first session so that you have plenty of time to talk, receive the treatment and be taught the routine to do on yourself at home.

Subsequent sessions are for one hour, although more time can be allocated if you or I feel that it is necessary.
